The last year has been difficult for everyone, and many people have had to cancel travel plans. If you are among those people why not take a vacation at home? Here are some pointers to help you plan your Tex-Mex staycation. Viva, Mexico!

DECOR

Mexican Flag Decorations

Decor is an essential element to the atmosphere of your staycation. You can pick up fiesta themed décor at most party supply stores. However, if you are more crafty you can create your own Mexican decor. All you need to create festive banners called papel picado, meaning ‘pecked paper’, is brightly colored paper and scissors. Tissue paper flowers are also a simple but effective craft project sure to give color and life to your staycation decor.

MUSIC

What better way to bring Mexico to your home than with music? Mexican culture is bursting with so many wonderful types of music. A classic choice would be Mariachi music. No need to hire a Mariachi band to come to your home. Today, music is a touch away on apps and websites. For a more Tex-Mex flair, Tejano music would be a fun choice to listen to during your staycation.

DRINKS

Beverages and cocktails always bring pizazz to any event and your Mexico staycation is no different. Most Mexican cocktails start with Tequila. Drinks like margaritas, Polomas, and mojitos are a popular choice. For a non-alcoholic option, horchata would be a delicious alternative. Horchata is a sweet rice-based drink with spices.

MOVIES

A well-done film can transport the viewer to a totally different world. There are so many films about or set in Mexico that would be a fantastic addition to your staycation. Some movies you might want to check out are:

  • Roma (2018) An Oscar winner about a domestic worker.
  • Coco (2017) A sweet animated film about the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead
  • Lorena, la de Pies Ligeros (2019) A short about long-distance runner Lorena Ramírez.
  • Nadie Sabrá Nunca (2018) A mother and young son use their imaginations to escape their real lives.

CULTURE

Art and architecture are an integral part of Mexican culture. Since you won’t be visiting actual museums during your staycation, visit them online. Most museums have online galleries for you to peruse. There is so much to explore, from ancient Aztec architecture to more modern artists like Frida Kahlo. You might just get lost for hours in the richness and beauty of Mexican culture.

FOOD

Arguably the best part of travel is the food, and Mexico is well known for its delicious cuisine. From tacos to flan and everything between, there are innumerable Mexican food recipes online. Or, forgo the work of cooking yourself and get take out. Some appetizing Mexican dishes are:

  • Enchiladas – usually a rolled corn tortilla filled with a filling and topped with a savory sauce.
  • Taco – a tortilla that is folded over and filled with meat, cheese, and/or any number of things.
  • Chili Rellenos – a stuffed pepper, usually poblano, that is breaded, deep-fried, and covered with a sauce.
  • Fajitas – grilled meat and/or vegetables wrapped in a tortilla with various toppings.
  • Carne Guisada – a traditional beef stew seasoned with cumin, chili powder, and jalapenos.
